One of the main rules that are followed regarding the game of football, especially in collegiate level and professional level football where the game is a lot more competitive, are the rules regarding the time and the famous coin toss. A game of competitive football will usually begin with a coin toss in order to determine the team that will be kicking off to start the game. The coin toss also determines which team will be the first to defend. The winner of the coin toss will choose if they will kick and receive the opening kick off, defend, or defer the first choice to the opposing squad in exchange for having the first choice for the second half of the game.

Many other rules of the game are in use right now, including specifics about scoring and illegal moves and tackles. There are also rules regarding measurements for length of runs and the amount of downs that each team has during a possession.
